Vampirella Annual: Prelude To Shadows in Stores Oct. 22nd

Before Vampirella was marked by the Cult of Chaos as a living sacrifice to Lady Umbra, the Queen of Shadows, she worked as an field operative for Cestus Dei, the Vatican's version of MI-6. In this one-shot, set before the "Our Lady of Shadows" story arc, Vampirella must go undercover at a French convent to investigate a series of weird deaths and odd disappearances believed to be the work of a long-dead evil witch known as Metifa, Satan's Mistress. That's right - one of the classic Warren-era menaces makes her Dynamite debut, 40+ years since her last appearance!

I wrote Prelude To Shadows as a tribute to Grindhouse 'eurotrash' such as Mario Bava's Black Sunday (1960), Juan L. Moctezuma's Alucarda (1977), and  Jess Franco's Venus In Furs (1969); Italian giallo cinema ala Dario Argento's Suspiria (1977) and Lucio Fulci's Don't Torture A Duckling (1972); as well as nunsploitation films like Ken Russell's The Devils (1971) and Gilberto Martínez Solares' Satanico Pandemonium (1975). I hope you enjoy it!

In stores October 22nd, just in time for Halloween!

I'm Writing Vampirella!

Yes, you heard me right! Thanks to the good people at Dynamite Comics, I am now the new writer for their monthly Vampirella series! I've taken over the scripting chores for the best-known female vampire character in comics, starting with a new #1 this coming June!

The story arc that kicks off my debut is entitled Our Lady of Shadows, and has Vampirella investigating the kidnapping of a little girl, only to find herself the centerpiece of a ritual that will turn her world upside down and force her to side with the strangest ally imaginable, as she attempts to save the world and dodge a team of elite Vatican hit-squad.

Besides having a lengthy background in writing about female vampires who hunt down their own kind, I used to read Vampirella, along with the other Warren Publications black & white magazines, when I was a teenager, and want to recapture some of those old-school thrills and chills that made those stories so distinctive. The interior artwork will be by Patrick Berkenkotter (The Torch, Avengers Invaders, Red Sonja) and Terry Dodson (Wonder Woman, The Defenders, Cat Woman, X-Men) will be providing the covers for the regular monthly title.

There are also Retailer Incentive covers by Jenny Frison (Revival, Angel, True Blood) Sergio Fernandez Davila (Legenderry, Red Sonja), Jack Jadson (Red Sonja, Teen Titans), Mimi Yoon, and Ken Haesar (The Living Corpse). There will also be a Subscription Cover by Stephanie Buscema (My Little Pony, Adventure Time), dedicated to those hardcore fans who place pre-orders with their local comic retailers. There will also be a Retailer Exclusive Variant Image  by Sergio Fernandez Davila that can be tailored to promote individual comic shops.

While I'm under orders not to let too many details slip about what I have planned for Vampirella, I will say that 2014 marks Vampirella's 45th Anniversary, and Dynamite's editorial team and I have some very interesting birthday surprises  lined up for her and her fans. So make sure to stop by your Friendly Neighborhood Comic Shop and pre-order a copy of Vampirella #1!

And if you have no Local Comic Shop, you can also order it directly from Dynamite Comics.

LEGENDS OF RED SONJA: A 40th Anniversary Tribute

Dynamite Comics is announcing Legends of Red Sonja, an all-star, all-woman sword & sorcery jam to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the iconic She-Devil With A Sword, at this weekend's Comic Con.

The brain-child of renown comics writer Gail Simone (Batgirl,Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman, Deadpool, Secret Six), the new scripter on the rebooted monthly series from Dynamite, Legends of Red Sonja is a mini-series that brings together such diverse talents as Marjorie M. Liu (The Hunter Kiss series), Mercedes Lackey (The Valdemar Series),Kelly Sue DeConnick (Captain Marvel, Ghost),Rhianna Pratchett (Mirror's Edge), Leah Moore (Albion, Tom Strong, The End Is Nigh), Tamora Pierce (The Song of the Lionesss series), Blair Butler (Host of MSN's Nerdcore), Meljean Brook (The Guardian series), Nicola Scott (Birds of Prey, Secret Six), Devin Grayson (Gotham Nights, Titans, Nightwing), and myself, Nancy A. Collins (Swamp Thing, The Sonja Blue Series, Vamps, The Golgotham Series)

I have been a fan of Robert E. Howard's work ever since I first picked up a copy of Roy Thomas & Barry Smith's CONAN THE BARBARIAN #23 from the spinner rack at the Sunflower Grocery Store in McGehee, Arkansas, 40 years ago. It would prove not only to be my introduction to the sub-genre known as sword & sorcery, but to the wider world of the old pulps, in particular WEIRD TALES, which lead to my discovery of such writers as H.P. Lovecraft, Frtiz Leiber, Clark Ashton Smith, Leigh Brackett, Robert Bloch, and, eventually, more contemporary fantasy writers such as Michael Moorcock and Karl Edward Wagner. I am honored to have been given a chance to add to Red Sonja's mythos and give back to a character that proved so pivotal in my own development as a writer.
